I understand that the railroad companies estimate for this year about 125.000 French Canadian immigrants from Quebec into this country. which would be about 10 per cent. in a single year. I understand the Government statisticians deny that. but concede about 80.000. which would be about 6 per cent. Six per cent. of the entire population crossing the border and coming down to the New England States and New York in a single year. The witness says: The immigration is simply immense. I asked him. what is it then that we want. why do we want commercial union or reciprocity with Canada ? He said we wanted raw material from Canada. among other things he mentioned lumber.
