But no. say these philosophers of the Pittsburgh syndicate. represented by the Senator from Rhode Island. no. that is not a blessing. but the reverse. and the lawmaking powerof the country is called upon to intervene and avert from the doom that awaits them the people of the United States who are about to be overpowered and overwhelmed by this cheap product. and by legislative fiat an increased price is to be put upon that article equal to all that had been taken off of it. I should like to know what sense there is in that.. what justice there is in that. what fairness and what political economy there is in that. Yet that is the principle upon which you are working. "Pauper labor ! 1 If you get the cheap article for the pauper labor. for which you are not responsible and which does not live in this country. who is to gainsay it and who is to object ? If it is not manufactured here. if we get the "heathen Chinee" to work for us in his own country upon a product that will be sold here at very small cost. I should like to know why the workingmen and the masses of the people here should not have the benefit of it and that much of American labor released for other and more productive and profitable employment.
