Argentine Republic. 231 per cent. All the countries I have named are wheatexporting countries. and as the lands bear no rental. and are almost inexhaustible in fertility. the production of wheat may be infinitely increased. When we reflect that the population of the whole world (outside of China and Africa) from 1870 to 1888 had only increased 27 per cent.. and the nations who consume our wheat. owing to emigration and other causes. have not increased in population at all. the prospect of the American wheatgrower who shouts for high protection and votes the Republican ticket seems gloomy indeed. The low price of wheat brought to export but 46.000.000 bushels in 1889 as against 150.000.000 in 1880. What is true of wheat is also true of the meat product-
