As my friend from Ohio said sotto voce. it is a good deal like Esau. We are trading off our birthright for a mess of pottage. and I have no doubt that the true policy of this country is that American land should be owned by American men. American by birth or naturalization. and that American corporations should be governed by American officers. In our policy in regard to land. in regard to residence. and in regard to corporations. in all our policies. in fact. we should steadily keep in view the necessity of protecting our own interests and of leaving something of the birthright of our fathers to our children.
