I agree with the Senator from Louisiana that the Senator from Maine and others who agree with that Senator are wholly inconsistent wheu they make rigid laws against the Chinese and treat them as an inferior race and entitled to no rights. and at the same time claim that the African is the equal in all respects with the white man and should be protected in every privilege. For that reason and for the same reason that has actuated the Senator from Louisiana. I have voted for every Chinese exclusion bill that has arisen since I have been a member of the Senate. But it seems to me that what the Senator from Louisiana says in regard to race questions and his argumeit in favor of these Chinese do not agree. I am upon the same line that I have been. while he seems disposed to part company.
