A sufficient amount of money was contributed. the site was selected. the foundation was built. the pedestal was erected. and thereupon the monument was received from the other side of the ocean and erected upon Liberty Island. Every dollar of money as I understandand believe it to have been assumed by the contributors to this fundand every dollar of money paid in for the purpose of assisting in the erec.tion of the pedestal anti the foundation. was upon the pledge. either expressed or implied. that Bedloes Island should never be used for any other purpose. that is. for any purpose of a commercial character. at least. Now it is proposed to make it an immigrant station. It isproposed to destroy.the symmetry and the character of the island. one of the most beautiful spots in the harbor of New York. and upon one side of the island to erect barracks for immigration purposes. Mr. President. there is another view to take of this case which I want to speak of here and now.
