The gentleman will find on page 20 of the report which accompanies this bill a letter from Mr. Hugh S. Thompson. Acting Secretary of the Treasury. in which appears the following language alluding to this Chinese exclusion act: Tle average pay of these employ6s will be about 65 per day. and it is believed that an appropriation of 630.000 will be adequate for the purpose for the fiscal year ending June 30. 1890. . Now. in accordance with this suggestion from the Treasury Department. the Committee on Appropriations. as the gentleman from Illinois will remember. reduced this appropriation from $50.000 to $30.000. regarding the latter amount as entirely adequate.
