Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500140464

I do not want to go back into the arguments of the canvass. because they ought to be familiar to the entire American public but the Senator from Vermont. with an enthusiasm which I had not expected. enters again into these arguments and asserts here today that the difference between labor in the United States and abroad is caused by the tariff. His position amounts to that or it amounts to nothing. He has drawn here an eloquent picture of the condition of the pauper labor of Europe and then of the sweet. comfortable domestic life of the American workingman. Mr. President. that is as old as the hills that surround this Capitol.
