Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500117857

So far as that is concerned. I will say to the Senator from Alabama that the records of the Senate will testify for me upon that subject. and I am willing to abide by my record in the Senate as to whether I have been in earnest or not in reference to Chinese exclusion. but I am glad that the Senator from Alabama. if he is willing to vote for this bill (and I do not yet know whether he is or not from any remarks that he has made). has come up to my view so far as this bill goes. and is willing to vote to abrogate the provisions of the existing treaty in order to exclude the coming of Chinese to this country. even those who have been here and have departed.
