I desire to correct that Senator in his statement of facts. and it was a statement. by the way. upon which he based the hours speech that he has just concluded. He started out with the premise that when the Burlingame treaty was entered into there were no Chinamen in this country. On surprise being expressed by the Senator from Colorado at that statement. he modified it. as I remember. by saying that there were at least but very few here then. and then he proceeded to state that it was by virtue of the provisions of the Burlingame treaty that the door was opened for Chinese immigration to this country. and he attempted to charge the responsibility of that legislation upon the Republican party.
