Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500116000

President. I did not say. as the Senator from Mississippi seems to have understood me. that my objection to Chinese coming to this country is because they do not come to remain. I said they could be deported. or you could stop them from coming. without violating the principle contended for that people have a right to emigrate and to go to any country to make homes wherever they see fit. because these people do not do that. As to their exclusion from this country. very grave reasons could be given why they ought to be excluded. I do not propose to discuss the Chinese question this afternoon. and I did not rise for that purpose.
