Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500115786

I am prepared to recur to the language involved in the resolution and to agree that we should make some tentative measure looking toward irrigation. Members from New York and New England. from.the South and from all parts of the country. should have an opportunity to reclaim this grand area. It can be reclaimed. The evidence shines through history that it is not merely possible but probable. It will give to our country something that will take away the menace from our extraordinary immigration. But I can not dwell upon these matters. I only intended to refer to the historical matters with reference to our own interests.
