And yet within the last ten days men in another place. some of them. have gotten up in their places and denounced and misrepresented exSenator Harrison. after steeping their tongues in gall. for his record touching immigration. They are a pretty set of ducks to talk about immigration. A Republican President. Chester A. Arthur. approved this bill prohibiting contract immigration. and it became a law on the 26th of February. 1885. President Cleveland was inaugurated on the 4th of March. 1885. and although the law was very stringent the abuse still continued. largely from a failure to enforce the law by this Administration. An amendatory act was passed and approved by the Fortyninth Congress on the 23d February. 1887.
