Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500108636

The gentleman forgot the significant halt of his party in the Fortyninth Congress. This has been referred to. sir. but I will refer to it again for the sake of continuity in my argument. and also for the purpose of drawing attention to some aspects of it that have not been referred to. My colleague introduced a bill in the Fortyninth Congress restricting Chinese immigration the very first bill day of the session. It was adequate to the situation. completely adequate to the situation. and I ask the attention of the gentleman from Indiana to the fact that it was very much better than the pretentious treaty. It would have been more useful. besides because it cameat a more critical time.
