I rose simply because so much surprise was expressed by the Senator from Oregon and the Senator from Nevada that the Senator from Missouri should have stated that the Republican candidate for the Presidency had not only aided in having Chinese naturalized in Indianapolis but received their votes when he was the Republican candidate for governor of Indiana in 1876. and they seemed to be anxious to obtain the record. I have not the record. but I have a verbatim report of a speech made recently by the senior Senatoi from Indiana in the city of Terre Haute. published in the Indianapolis papers and not contradicted. in which the Senator from Indiana says: Every almondeyed Mongolian now in the United States is here as the result of treaties and laws made by the Republican party. and when General Itarrison voted fourteen tines in the Senate against restrictions on Chinese imimnigratiom lie was simply carrying out time principles and adhering to the established practices of his party. When lie voted in the IPortyseventh Congress against both the bills reported by Senator Miller. of California. and Mr. Page. of the House. restricting the immigration of Chinese laborers into the United Slates. he was faithful to his instiicts of hositility to American labor. When he voted to strike out of these measures all restriction on the right and power of the Stale courts and of the United States courts to naturalize tie Chinese and to adinit them to citizenship. he was not only consistent with the teachings and logic of his party. but also with the sanction lie himself gave to the naturalization of Chinamnen at Indianapolis. pro ured by his law partner from the courts with his full knowledge and approval.
