It gives the history of a grand banquet in which Republicans and Democrats alike participated. It happened that the most distinguished men there were Democrats. because the administration of the State government at the time was Democratic. Among all the speeches at that banquet there was nosuggestion that Chinese immigration was to become an evil. They did not realize the dangers involved in the Chinese question. although the Chinese had been among them for nearly twenty years. and in view of this it seems uncharitable to complain of the people of the East for not understanding the question without time for consideration and investigation.
