And in the course of that appealand I shall have it read presentlyoccurs the language which I have just read and which is ascribed to the late Senator Morton who. it is said: "Joined with the other members of the committee in declaring that it has be-. come painfully evident that the Pacific coast must in time either become American or Mongolian. !Also. that the Chinese have advantages which will put them far in advance In this race for possession. They can subsist wherethe American would starve. They can work for wages which will not furnish the barest necessities of life to an American."
