Perhaps the language of my amendment is too sweeping. but I am willing to modify it so as to effect that purpose and that purpose alone. A number of the objects mentioned by the gentleman from Arkansas in his remarks on Saturday last are very praiseworthy. In this bill we provide for a more thorough enforcement of the law against contract labor. and whatever appropriation is necessary to enable the Department of Justice to more thoroughly enforce the laws on that subject that we have upon the statutebook ought to be. and I have no doubt will be. cheerfully granted. But while providing for that. we should be careful how we legalize these back claims. which have no semblance ofjustice. In other words.
