Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500079074

It is a reasonable request and I hope there will be no objection. The amendment I offer reduces the duty 25 per cent.. and in the name of the farmers of the great West I protest against a further reduction. We ask that our farmers shall be protected against the pauper labor of India. The flaxseed of India is of a better quality than that raised by our people and yields 4 per cent. more oil. and with the insignificant sum paid tbr labor in India our mills must close and our farmers must cease to gr6w flax unless they can be protected substantially as now. [Here the hammer fell.]
