They arepartly covered with timber. not of very great value. Some of them have no tiuber upon them. But that parish is now the center of a large immigration from Iowa and other Northwestern States. coming to Louisiana for the benefit of a milder climate in which to secure homes. It would be very injurious to have these lands complicated with the provisions of this bill and withdrawn from the market and subject to five years delay. More than that. because it will take a long time under the provisions of thi. bill before the Department of the Interior is properly advised by examination whether these lands are agricultural.whether they have timber upon them worth preserving. or otherwise. I wish to say. Mr. Speaker. that these immigrants find a means of support in this timber at the beginning. They put a part of the land in cultivation immediately. and as fast as they can cut the timber off they have the advantage of the timber. which enables them to erect their habitations and to secure and improve their homes.
