I have a letter from Mr. Wright. written within a few weeks. in which he calls attention to the fact that in the census of population and in the fishery schedule the fishermen of Massachusetts are set down at about 14.000 in round numbers. and that includes all those who are engaged in clamming and digging for mussels and procuring bait and weirfishing. but they do not undertake to separate in their schedules those who sail out on these banks codfishing and mackereling. and the returns made under the Massachusetts bureau put the figures down at 7.980 instead of 14.000. and he says that it is impossible to account for the discrepancy. Mr. Wrights statement is as follows: From the population schedules it appears the number of separate. individual fishermen of Massachusetts for the year 1885 was 7.973. of which number 3.843 were foreignborn and 4.130 nativeborn. but of the foreignborn 841 were naturalized citizens. so the nativeborn and naturalized citizens numbered 4.130 nativeborn. plus 84L naturalized citizens. equal 4.97t native and naturalized citizens. as against 3.002 what might be called aliens.
