Kentucky. Tennessee. Georgia. and Texas. he in person visited the territory granted. sailing from Wilmington. N. C.. with a party of Southern emigrants. in order to select a suitable point usa commercial center. to secure the trade. commerce. and coistrol the mining operations of the territorygranted. and insure its adlvantages to the United Slates in general and the State of Virginia specially. Jn fullillment of this purpose. and in accordance with souind judgment. he selected Porte Lat Tablas. within the grant. on the Orinoco River. at or below the mouth of the Caroni. 60 mites below Ciudad Boelivar. the most accessible shipping point of the newlydisovered gold deposits. and possessing ample wvater front. and depth of water for theolargestvessels. with a free. unobstructed channel out. This point he named "Caroni." aud it is so designated on many American maps.
