Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500041610

I have no objection to the amendment suggested by the Senator from Arkansas . I have no doubt myself that in a general way there have been a great many lands selected in the State of Florida as swamp lands which were not swamp lands. I have in my hand the report of the commissioner of lands and immigration of the State of Flomida for the years 1883 and 1884. from which I will read an extract. simply to show that this process of selection. presumably of some at least of the same kind of land the Senator from Florida has spoken of. is still going on. As he is a Senator from that State and is in effect arraigning the administration of his State. I do not think that he should feel sensitive about being brought into direct relation with this investigation.
