Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500010862

I think he was alderman of some little city. or something of that sort. Finally. he became a candidate for Congress. Just before the election the charge was made that he was not a naturalized citizen. Two gentlemen. Mr. Bell and Mr. Moynihan. as the testimony shows. went to him and said. "The statement is made that you are not a naturalized citizen." His reply was. "I have got my papers." Did he stop there? No. He says. "Igot my papers in 1857 or 1858." Upon the first blush of the moment. when distinctly chaiged with a want of naturalization. what does he say. and I call your attention to it again? I got my papers in 1857 or 1858. Did you get then all the papers that you got?
