Session #49 · 1885–87

Speech #490108436

I deny there was ever an acre of land given to this road. It was a fair contract by which the Government was to be the beneficiary. and by which the road was to be also benefited. The Government was to be benefited in the construction of the road so that emigrants might be able to get into and open up to settlement and cultivation that then almost inaccessible Territory. In consideration of the construction of this road for that purpose the corporation was to be compensated by this grant of lands. As I have said. it was a fair contract. with obligations on both sides. and no one can say the road has not fulfilled fairly its part of the contract to the extent that it is built.
