Session #49 · 1885–87

Speech #490052381

The same prejudices which exist here against Chinese in Chinia exist against American residents. If we fail to make some reparation for damages done to Chinese residents here. itis but natural in the cities of China. in the densely populated quarters in which our American residents live there. the Chinese will be actuated by the same feelings which actuated these assailants of Chinese in Wyoming. and our residents will suffer therefrom. But it is evident it is the desire of our people that more strict laws be passed against Chinese immigration. The experience of the last twentyfive years has demonstrated that Chinese laborers are unwelcome in this country. We never want to see the day when our American laborers shall live in the manner in which the Chinese live.
