On the following day during a charge at Stoney Creek. Virginia. lie received a wound in the left foot. while mounted upon his captains pack mule. two horses havingbeen shot from under him. The following morning. the mule being much jaded and unable to keep up. he was ordered by his major. commanding regiment. to go oi ahead of the command. by 10 oclock tile command came tip to himand passed him. andat length he found himself in witha column of three or four thousand colored refugees. who had deserted their homes and Joined the expedition. At a certain point tile road curved. and lie was ordered by General Wilson to cut across lots to the head of the column and join his regiment. which he said was in advance. This lie proceeded to do. coming out on the road some half a mile aslead of the column. here he was halted and captured by fourteen of the enemys dismounted cavalry. and was quickly hurried into the thick woods to the rear.
