Session #49 · 1885–87

Speech #490043701

You must find a market for them somewhere. or there will be idle men and labor troubles too. The only countries you have for markets are right here by your very doors. right here on your borders. sister republics formed after the likeness of our own. inaull sympathy with our Republic. with our purposes. with our civilization. and with our designs for the future. willing to trade. anxious to model after us. even adorning their parks with the rtatues of our Washington and of our Lincoln. Take the Argentine Republic. today growing as rapidly as the United States. having as large an immigration in proportion to her inhabitants as the United States.today. with a splendid climate. a fertile soil. a good people. divided into states. and every state equipped with a normal school modeled on ours in New England. and in every normal school a teacher from the United States at the head. instructing with all their might and all their energy in the lessons of our civilization. The Argentine Republic appropriated last year $59.000.000 to railroads alone. and is building them from that appropriation today. Is not this progress ?
