Session #49 · 1885–87

Speech #490011833

If the Senator does not choose to understand the point. as a matter of course I can not compel him to do so. I simply stated. as he was passing. that California had had an independent organization in 1846. I give my authority. Now the question is between the author of this book and the Senator from Indiana. if he denies it. I take this to be true. I then stated that it came in under the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. but that prior to that time the inhabitants of the Territory and the emigrants from the United States had organized an independent government. That is all I stated.
