Session #49 · 1885–87

Speech #490006026

The farmers arc paying their rents irregularly. or not at all. their stock in trade has often to be distrained to recover arrears of rent. The landowners are overwhelmed by mortgages. When at last. in order to extricate tlivmselves. they try to sell their estates. they find no purchasers. or have to be satisfied with a price onethird below former estimates. The discouragement is universal. No more agricultural inprovements are being effected. employment is.consequently. lacking. and there is great indigence. Hence that increasing emigration. for which special trains and steamers have to be arranged. It is a veritable exodus. What remedy for so much suffering?
