But nearlyall the lands in that portion oftheStateare adapted to agriculture. particularly to the cultivation of cotton and corn and fruits by white labor. The soil is light and friable and easy to manage. This railway company. for the purpose of inducing immigration there. made a contract with a gentleman by the name of Cullman. who was a German of wealth and of distinguished family. He engaged that if they would sell the lands to immigrants. as he brought them over. at a minimum price. and would also furnish to that colonytransportation at reduced rates fbr a series of years. he would undertake to settle that country. Before that time the population was about five or six to the square mile in what is called the Sand Mountain region. a veryscattered population. living upon the wild productions of the earth mainly. The men who settled out in that regionsupported themselves chiefly by the chase.
