COKE. I simply desire that our people should be let alone in this regard. because they need no legislation. There has never been any complaint there by immigrants- they all do well who come there. There is no law there under which the specific performance of a contract for labor can be enforced. When they get to Texas they are free in thisregard to comply with their contracts or not comply with them. as they choose. if they have made any. An immigrant can not land upon that soil and breathe that atmosphere without feeling that he is afree man. The servile labor Senators speak of in the North and East does not and can not exist there. Homesteads are too easily acquired for that.
