Speech #480122069

If we never have afiother laborer from abroad coming into this country. we shall have poorlypaid labor unless there shall be some arrangement made by which the proportion which the laborer. the wageworker. is to get of production shall be larger than it is under unrestrained competition. -The difficult problem is to adjust these relations that the laborer shall be paid a reasonable proportion of the results of his labor. whether byState action or national public policies. Anything that falls short of this. in my opinion. is utterly futile and utterly unreasonalle. I shall support t7 ie bill not because it strikes any shackles from labor. not because it prevents the competition ofa few contract laborers brought into this country. which is going to be of any benefit. but simply because itis demanded by the voice of the laboring people of this country. And I do so with the conviction that the bill will be of no benefit to them.
