Session #48 · 1883–85

Speech #480119045

The Senator from New Hampshire. I dare say. never would have put that in the bill. because by doing so hewould have cutoff the supplyof laborthat is beingreceived annually and monthly and daily from Canada to assist themanufacturers in the Northern States to carry on their operations. When Senators came forward with bills that are pronounced to be very valuable and very benevolent toward other parts of the world. let us see whether they are willing to include their own section in the denunciations of the bill and in the provisions which prohibit the emloymentof imported contract labor. Let us see that. I speak disinterestedly about this. because the South is not employing foreign labor.
