Session #48 · 1883–85

Speech #480112241

In a country of vast expause and boundless resources we see. we feel nothing of the difficulties which environ nations with limited territory and a superabundant population. Up to this time there has been a path of egress into broader fields for those who. crowded together in unwieldy masses beyond thesea. sought a breathing place in this hospitable and libertyloving land. but how shall we stand affected here when we begin to feel a like pressure? We occupy the ultima Thule. From here there is no escape. no relief by emigration. and human wisdom and forethought must solve the problem. Mr. Pesident.
