Speech #480090831

Italian males exceed Italian females in the United States today over 92.000 iu a total population of little over 135.000. and Hungarian males exceed females nearly 23.000 in a total population of 42.884. there being lut 11.526 of these people of both sexes in the United States in 1880. The total Chinese poplulation of both sexes in 1880 was 104.427. the excess of males being 06.000. The parallelism between the Chinese and Italians in this direction is certainly striking. As bearing upon the character of these immigrants as desirable material for citizenship. the following data. coailed from a statement on comparative statistics on education. issued by the Bureau of Education for and during te year 1882. may be of interest. England. Ireland. and Germany are included for the purpose of contrast.
