They toil unceasingly from early dawn until late at night under the watchful eye of the "boss." and the pittance they receive from their employers hardly serves to support. them in the most humble mode of life. It is of this class that Homer speaks when he says "toil is the lot of all. and bitter woe the fate of many." The condition of the laboring classes. mechanics and artisans. in this country today is indeed pitiable. and only one degree removed from slavery. We are in the habit of frequentlyreferring to the servile and pauper labor of Europe. and contrasting with it the intelligent and better paid labor of our own country. but the facts. Mr. Speaker. do not warrant the statements so commonly made. or the conclusions arrived at.
