Session #48 · 1883–85

Speech #480060022

We have had very much said about Chinese immigration. The attention of the last Congress and of this has been directed to that subject. That has been a terror to the American people for some time. and we have spent a long time on the subject. Now we have a new bill from the House about Chinese labor. as I understand. and my friend will agree with me that the importation of Chinese laborers is but a drop in the bucket when you have all the world to import lazzaroni and convicts from under the contract system. It would seem that something imperative was demanded and that in haste.
