Session #48 · 1883–85

Speech #480052847

Ican notyieldanymoreofmy time. Whenthislegislation was before Congress two years agoand I have the record here before mesixtysix Republicans. sixtysix members of the other side of the House. who stand here pretending to protect American labor. voted against that bill. When the bill to limit immigration for ten years was befbre the House. thirtyseven members of the House voted against that bill. and of that number thirtyfour were Republicans. and but three Democrats. Upon this proposition. then. as to whether my party is in favor of free trade. in favor of placing the labor of America upon a level with the pauper labor of Europe. I am willing to be judged by the record. My colleague from Indiana. who always talks well. asked today upon the floor of this House why not limit the immigration to Castle Garden. why not limit the immigration of the Irishman. and the German. and the Scandinavian? Why not limit the immigration of men who come here with their wives and their children to become part and parcel of this great bodypolitic. to partake with us of the blessings which a free government insures to us all? I was sorry that the gentleman should ask such a question. These people came here from abroad because they love free government. They came to be of us and with us. They came to bring forth honest sons and virtuous daughters. to build up the strength and the glory and the prosperity of the American people. And I say it comes with poor grace from any gentleman on this floor to talk of comparing in any measure whatever the condition or the qualities of the immigrants who land at Castle Garden with those who land at the Golden Gate of California.
