The details of the present bill have been fully explained by the gentleman from Massachusetts [Mr. RicE] and his colleague upon the committee. the gentleman from Illinois . But the merits of the whole question of Chinese immigration seem to have been entered into. and I propose to raise my voice against all legislation of this nature. whether it be the bill before us or the law which it is proposed to amend. The act of 1882 can never be amended to my satisfaction except by an absolute repeal. I opposed the bill of 1882 because I believed it was unAmerican. because I believed it was unrepublican. because I believed it was undemocratic. because I believed it was unpatriotic.
