Session #48 · 1883–85

Speech #480035909

But I desire to call the attention of the House very briefly to a few points on this subject of Indian education. This subject. Mr. Chairman. is one of the great humanitarian problems of the day. and is well deserving the earnest attention of Congress. The race questions are among the great questions which have perplexed and troubled the American people. Ever since the formation of our Government we have had the negro question before us. After that was substantially settled we were troubled by the Mongolian or Chinese question. That has been put in shape and laid away on the shelf. And now we have the Indian question still before us.
