Session #48 · 1883–85

Speech #480034304

It will take nearly fifteen years longer. at the present rate of coinage of the silver dollar. to have the same amount of silver coined and in circulation that France has today among her 37.000.000 of people. . Where will this country be at the end of fifteen years from this time? We will have seventy. probably seventyfive. millions of people. with the present increase of population by immigration and natural increase. We have a territoryI need not compare it with the territory of any other country. I say that when you reach the amount of coinage of silver which is now in circulation in France. about fifteen years will have elapsed at the present rate of coinage. and by that time we will have almost if not quite doubled the population of France at this time. and as to material wealth and territory there is no comparison between this country and that of France.
