If we vote to keep out persons of one nationality. who shall say that we may not on some other occasion vote to keep out those of another nationality ? These votes of these gentlemen are brought into this discussion as a reason why Calilbrnians should vote for a high duty in order to protect the plantations of Louisiana. We forced our way into China. and there are 100.000 more or less Americans in China today. Suppose that the Chinese should say that the Americans must go. that they would have no more Yankees in that country. and thenthe Chinese statesmen following the example of my two friends should say that they had voted for that because they did not want American coolies in China. [Here the hammer fell.]
