Speech #470164739

How much richer is he made by receiving $4 a day in one hand if with the other he must pay out the whole of that amount or even more because of the high prices which prevail? Sir. the warmest friends and supporters I have had are the workingmen of my district. They know that I have always been true to their interests. they know that upon the questions of Chinese immigration. the eighthour law. and all similar propositions. I have been their advocate. friend. and defender. they know that I am and ever have been ready to hear and to heed their demands. But I do not recognize this Republican club as the representative of Louisville workingmen. nor was I willing that its claim. its declarations should go unchallenged upon this floor. [Here the hammer fell.]
