I do not believe for one. and I hope the people whom I have the honor in part to represent. do not believe that this cry of protection to American labor is a sincere one. We believe it is hypocritical. we believe that in the Senators own country he employs foreign labor whenever he can get it cheaper than American labor. and not only that. as was said by the Senator from Massachusetts the other day. that they welcomed everybody that would come here to take part with us and to become a citizen and a member of this great Republic and so on and so onnot only that. sir. but they welcome with open arms the introduction of the Chinese. not the better class of Chinese. but the refuse of Chinese society. the offclippings of the fungus growth upon that society. and that never comes here to stay and become citizens. I believe there is but one instance of a Chinese subject ever having been naturalized in this country. They come professedly to make money by underworking the American laborer. and when they get a certain amount they go back to China. But those men are welcome. and for their welfare. in the socred name of American labor. we are called upon to submit to taxation.
