Speech #470157772

He sympathized heartily with the present prospects that in Georgia there will be a rapid development of her natural mineral resources. and that the cotton grown on her genial soil and that of the "Sunny South" will be made ready for her Southern looms and spindles. He had no regrets for the past in the brightening prospects of the future. but looked to his State. often called the "Empire State of the South." as likely to be improved and advanced by the results of the war to a higher plane of wealth. strength. and population. His hope was that his State would rise with fresh vigor from the misfortune and devastation of war by the building of railroads. the opening of mines of coal and iron. and by the tide of immigration and labor from other States as well as from foreign lands. Senator HILL was consistently a Union man before the war. He resisted the secession of his State until after the ordinance of secession was passed.
