Session #47 · 1881–83

Speech #470075015

I hope the Senate will understand now that this amendment does not propose toretain anyportion of this money from the Creek orphan fund. but it merely charges to the Creek Nation the amount which has been expended or paid by the Government of the United States to them. The committee in their report speak ofThe sum of $68.956.20 taken without authority of law from said fued and applied to the genora purposes of the Creek Nation. The second item isThe sum of $106799.68. taken withont authority of law from said fend and applied to the support of loyal refugees of the Creek Nation. Now. they admit that this first item should be charged to the Creek Nation. The advocates of the bill. and as I understand from the Senator from Oregon who has charge of the bill the Creek Nation admit this fact.
