Session #47 · 1881–83

Speech #470065297

They are not able further to demonetize silver. On the contrary. the last monetary conference showed that they had gono as far in that direction as it was possible for them to go. and alittl further than it was safe to go. I say. then. that this nation. with its vast extent of territory. reaching as it does from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the lakes tothe Gulf. with its fifty millions of busy people handling and transacting all kinds of business. with a population intcreasing by immigration at the rate of a half a million annually. this great nation is able to utilize our own product of the precious metals without asking the permission of foreign governments. Hence I denounce as a crime the attempted demonetization of silver or its limited coinage as embraced in that bill. I denounceit as a swindle.
