Session #47 · 1881–83

Speech #470058150

My mind does not assent to many of the economic propositions which are presentd. here. I do not perceive that the protection of American labor is necessarily dependent upon the exclusion of this or the otherclass of people. I am not sure but that more powerful causes than the exclusion of any class of foreign immigration here. be they good or bad. are nccessary for the protection of American labor against the power of coinipetition. I do not wish to be conmnitted to the economic ideas which aire urged in support of the bill and which. in my judgment. will prove to be entire fallacies. The laws which regulate the comfort and wellbeing of the laborer ought to be the primary subject of consideration with every statesman. but how his condition is to be bettered by extravagant prices in the articles of subsistence. how famine prices dependent upon scarcity are to benefit the laborer. the poor wife and the poor child. or how an abundance and a cheap market of the necessaries of life are to injure. him. are questions which have not been answered in this discussion. and I think perhaps it many be difficult to answer them.
