I submit that from the official facts before us. and which the gentleman from New York had an opportunity of reading. because I placed the pamphlet in his bands at least two weeks ago. there is no need for precipitancy . and with these official facts there is also the knowledge that if OMahoney was an American citizen there is a question at least worthy of consideration whether. by permanent residence in Ireland and accepting and performing official function as a public officer under British law. he has not by his own acts forfeited his American citizenship. He has not resided in this country sixty days since his naturalization. went abroad. engaged in business. and held office. and yet you are going to demand of the British Government for himee that he be unconditionally released. Let him show by his works that be appreciates his American citizenship. He was not traveling abroad as a gentleman of leisure or residing there temporarily as an American citizen.
